When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the American Red Cross not only sent locally raised donations but also disaster specialists who provided expertise and supported relief efforts. A big job considering one Red Cross disaster specialist said that 90 percent of homes and buildings were damaged.
Here at home, the chapter assists ongoing efforts to the community of West, Texas — a town that endured a traumatic explosion at the West Fertilizer Company storage and distribution facility. American Red Cross DFW lent a hand with emergency needs, a safe place to stay and a warm meal and also helped West community members cope with the tragedy. American Red Cross DFW is part of long-term planning with other Texas chapters to help families in West get back on their feet and help them recover.
Along with disaster relief and assistance, the Red Cross has a tremendous impact on our local community, coordinating much needed blood donation drives as well as health and safety classes including first aid and CPR certification, babysitter training and swim lessons.
