The Bitter Creek Ranch, once owned by the legendary cattleman Charles Goodnight, known as the “father of the Texas Panhandle,” was just what a buyer was looking for.
With 35,643 contiguous acres that was once the Mare Pasture of the famed JA Ranch, Bitter Creek was recently sold, making it the largest ranch sale to date by Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty. The JA Ranch in Palo Duro Canyon was the Panhandle’s first ranch.
Listed for $33,861,275 or $950 an acre, the ranch could have been used for a variety of income producing uses. But the new buyer plans to continue it as a large cattle operation, said Harlan Ray, Senior Vice President of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s and partner with David Burgher in Burgher-Ray Ranch Sales.
“Buyers today are looking for large acreages. Bitter Creek fit the bill perfectly,” Ray said.
Having the Sotheby’s global network, in addition to the Burgher-Ray marketing, was a huge benefit in finding the right buyer, he said.
Located on Highway 70 in Donley and Hall counties, Bitter Creek is well known for its hunting with extensive quail, dove, turkey, whitetail and mule deer. Excellent fishing can be found in two stocked ponds.
The ranch’s extensive improvements include several homes, hunting lodges and camps. It also has numerous pens, barns, an arena and more water, including irrigation quality water, than is commonly found on working cattle ranches in the area.
“All of the improvements are top quality,” Ray said.
With four bedrooms the main house features rustic luxury living. Through large glass windows or from a covered patio, it has great views overlooking a shaded lawn and a spring-fed pond.
The kitchen has a commercial-grade, stainless-steel range and double oven. A large rock fireplace dominates a rustic dining room, large enough to serve a crew of farmhands, family or guests.
