Who Lights Up the Night Sky in Dallas?

03/31/2014

The hands at the helm of Dallas’ wondrous light displays have a dream job—creating art out of electricity and painting a larger-than-life canvas for all to see.

In the world of artistic lighting, the Omni Hotel has made its colorful mark on Dallas’ newly redeveloped south side. Recently, the fully lit, 20-story exterior became a movie screen for the 2013 Expanded Cinema event and hosted hundreds of visitors who gathered outside to watch movies on the city’s biggest “big screen.”

Pat Anderson of Matthews Southwest is in charge of launching the Omni lightshow, which often pays tribute to big sporting events, holidays and charitable organizations. Look across the skyline on a certain weekend in the fall, and you’ll see Texas/OU colors. Check back on July 4th and you’re likely to see fireworks played out along the side of the building.

Anderson also considers the space a great opportunity to acknowledge those who’ve made social contributions. “When Nelson Mandela died, I came home from work that evening and saw the story on the news and thought I should do something special. So I decided to put up the South African flag,” he said. “My favorite part is having the opportunity to participate in the view of the downtown skyline on a daily basis—to look at any picture of the skyline and know that I played a small part in that beautiful image.”

A few blocks away, the ball that started it all is operated by Daryl Vaughan, owner of Light Partners. Since 1978, Reunion Tower has brightened the skyline, and Vaughan, a renowned lighting expert who has worked with entertainers such as Elton John, The Rolling Stones and U2, is committed to celebrating all things Dallas. Passersby often know when the Cowboys, Rangers, Stars or Mavericks have won a game, simply by looking at the Reunion ball pulsing with team colors.

As seen in the Dallas Morning News:

In recent years more and more traditional homeowners have been looking into Dallas’ new tradition—living in our exciting urban center.

Because of all the wonderful new changes in our city center, I have been touting “live, work and play” in Dallas, so last month I decided to do just that. My wife, Nancy, and I spent three days and two nights living at Museum Tower, the city’s premier high-rise in the heart of Downtown Dallas.

The arrival experience was breathtaking, including the dramatic motor court and lobby accompanied by warm greetings from attentive staff, the elevator ride direct to the entrance of our home on the 35th floor, and then the “wow” of the most spectacular views of the city. As we enjoyed the weekly cocktail party on the Terrace and then joined a few guests for a dinner planned by Tanya Mendenhall, Director of Resident Relations, and prepared by renowned chef Ken Rathbun, the mantra was relaxed luxury.
